HISTORY OF PAWNBROKING
Hello all, and welcome to my blog!!! My name is Sasheen Arguello, President of Big Daddy’s Jewelry & Pawn. I would like to start by a quick story of how the “Pawn Industry” started.
Pawnbroking is one of the oldest businesses in the world! In the West, pawnbroking existed in the Ancient Greek and Roman Empires. As the empire spread its culture, pawnbroking went with it. In the East, the business existed in China 3000 years ago. Pawnbrokers also played a part in England’s creation of the Magna Carte in 1215. When the reigning King was kidnapped by his step-brother’s followers, pawnbrokers loaned the money that was used to ransom the King. In 1338, Edward III pawned his jewels to raise money for his war in France. King Henry V did the same in 1415. Queen Isabella of Spain pawned her jewelry to finance Christopher Columbus’s first voyage to the New World in the 1400’s. Pawnbroking has been around for a VERY VERY long time!
The best thing about going to work everyday in a pawnshop, especially at Big Daddy’s, is that everyday is different! I never have the same repetative work day. I am VERY proud to call myself a Pawnbroker!
